Steampunk Santa

I went with something different from a zombie Santa this year.  This is my way of wishing you Happy Holidays! Enjoy and have fun, everybody!

Renato Alexandre

Long time, no update... I've been incredibly busy and with very little time to update my little corner of the internets. I'll try to make an extra effort to update more regularly!
This is a sketch I did at work of a character (Renato Alexandre) from a portuguese comedy show. When I got home, I decided to put some colors on it to relax a little. Hope you dig it!

Feira do livro de Gondomar 2012

Here are some photos of a book fair that took place in a small town in northern Portugal (Gondomar), where I was signing some autographs to promote the newest Zona Book, Zona Nippon 1.

Arrested Development

I've been going through a massive Arrested Development appreciation phase. It's definitely one of the best shows to ever be on TV, and it's coming back! That's pretty exciting. To celebrate this, I've been drawing some of the characters. Enjoy!

A simple drawing, done partly out of boredom, partly out of nostalgia. Enjoy!

Chori Rider - Primera Brasa

Chori Rider - Primera Brasa is a 3-page comic, published on GAS3K.3, an uruguayn comics publication with several contributors and which you can check out here. This short comic focuses on the origin of the Chori Rider, a character in which any similarity to other flame-headed bikers is purely coincidental. Chori fights for the right to letting each person eat what they want freely, without pressure or propaganda from the opposing side. It's a light hearted story and a funny character.

The comic was scripted by my friend Magnus Von Tesla, I drew it and my boyfriend Pedro Carvalho did a great work with the grey tones.

I'll color this as soon as I have the time. It'll also be available in english soon.

Enjoy!

H. P. Lovecraft

Well, I'm finally on vacations and I need to produce some art, so I decided to create some warm-up drawings. This is the first one I did - H. P. Lovecraft. He's sort of a polarizing figure for me, because although many of his cultural ideas are very negative and something I don't agree with at all, his legacy is amazing. He's one of the most influential horror writers of all time, and he created one of the most intriguing and layered mythos of horror literature, the Cthulhu Mythos. Some of his stories are among my favorite horror works, so I decided to draw him.

I used some brushes created by Anjin Anhut. Hope you like it!

VIII International Comics' Festival of Beja

I completely forgot to post this earlier, but anyway. I was invited by the organization of the VIII International Comics’ Festival of Beja (a portuguese comics festival) to have a solo exhibition as part of the festival! It was my first solo exhibition, so I was super excited to have my work be a part of such an awesome festival. Here you have some selected photos. Hope you like them!

If you look closely, you can see my name in there!

Here I am, joined by a mural made from one of my illustrations, Mad Scientist.

This section showcased some publications in which I published comics or illustrations.

One of the most famous pages of A Garagem de Kubrick, poking fun at 300.

Some more publications with my work.

Joined by all the good folks who visited my exhibition.

Alien

It’s that time you’ve all been waiting for: a new Mike and Carla jam! This time, we decided to pay homage to the Alien movie series. I very recently re-watched the quadrilogy with Pedro (it was an awesome re-watch, and Alien is still my favorite of the four), so doing the Alien-related jam was extra cool.

This is my piece, check out Mike’s over here (hint: it’s awesome!).

Game of Thrones - Joffrey

Here my part of An Art Jam of Ice and Fire with the always brilliant Mike Horowitz. We had to draw a character and their corresponding sigil. My piece was late, but Mike delivered and awesome rendition of Jojen Reed last week, so if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you go to his tumblr and check it out.
I love Game of Thrones - both the series and the books (I’m currently reading A Dance With Dragons) - and the hard part was deciding which character to draw. I’ve drawn Ned Stark, Jon Snow and Jamie Lannister in the past, so I wanted to try someone new. I ended up picking Joffrey, because he’s just so damn hateable. I think we all love to have that one character we hate, and for me that’s Joffrey. He’s just so cruel and twisted, I can’t stop myself from hating him with every fiber of my being. That being said, I had fun drawing him!
I just had to resist adding in a speech bubble to make him say “I’m a little shit”.
Stay tuned for more future drawing jams between me and Mike!

Commission - Individeos

Over the past few days I’ve been working on a big commission. I did it for the awesome portuguese production company Individeos, of which my friend João Leitão is a partner. He asked me to draw himself and the other 3 Individeos partners riding dinosaurs on the moon. It was a really fun concept, so I had a blast drawing this. The guys dug it as well, so I’m a happy camper. Since I’m so happy, I’ll share the preliminar sketches, the flats and the final look of this piece.

This was one of the first sketches. Messy pencils all around.

This version is a little cleaner, and the layout is a little more defined.

Here are the color flats.

Final version.

Hope you dig it!

Festival MAB

Last weekend, I was at a small comics festival that took place in my hometown, and I drew stuff for whoever wanted it. I always love drawing for people, and hanging out with my art buddies, which is something I can’t do very often, so it was a good day. Here are a couple of photos and sketches I drew while I was there.

Our small gang of artists - Fil, Manuel Alves, Ana Oliveira, Pedro Carvalho and me.

Me and Pedro, drawing away! God, I need a haircut.

I don't know what's wrong with my face, but I'm drawing a zombie.

Here a page with two zombies: one drawn by Pedro (bottom) one by me (top), for our friend Rui Alex.

This zombie was drawn for the very nice Paulo Brito.

Here's me and Pedro doing our part on setting up our gerrilla Zona art exhibit!

Basically, I drew a lot of zombies.

Misfits - Nathan

I loved the first two seasons of Misfits - a fantastic show that you should be watching, if you're not doing that already. Nathan Young is pretty much one of the best, funniest characters ever, so here's a quick drawing of him.

Enjoy, and make sure you watch Misfits!

A Garagem de Kubrick 38

I went ahead and translated the latest page from the webcomic I draw, A Garagem de Kubrick, for your viewing pleasure. Don't forget to fullview! Hope you dig it :)

Han and Chewie

I did this piece for a special event (Tertúlia de BD de Lisboa - a monthly dinner where a lot of active portuguese comic fans and creators gather to eat, draw and talk) on which I was a special guest this month.

Han and Chewie, everybody! Me and Pedro have been revisiting the Star Wars saga, so when I sat down to draw, this immediately came to mind.

I apologize for not updating the blog in a while, but I've been working on a lot of stuff that I can't show right now. Good news is that in a little while I'll have a whole new batch of comics to show!

Looking back on 2011

I noticed that some awesome artists I really admire (Evan "Doc" Shaner, Dean Trippe and Mike Maihack) updated their tumblrs/websites recently with a look back at some of the art they produced on 2011. It's an awesome idea, so here's a little montage with some of the pieces I did on 2011. Enjoy!
